Road closures planned to install electricity cables

Road closures planned to install electricity cables

THE installation of three new electricity cables will require the closure of two roads in Lyme Regis while the work takes place.

Ozone Terrace and Cobb Road will each be closed for two weeks in October and November.

National Grid said the new cables would feed a new substation in the Cobb car park, helping to improve the electricity supply in the area, reduce power cuts and increase the capacity available to allow for low carbon technologies to be connected, such as car chargers.

A drop-in session will be held at the Guildhall in Lyme Regis on Thursday 1 August from 12pm to 2pm for residents and businesses to ask questions and find out more information.

The work will start with a two-week closure of Ozone Terrace from 14 October to allow for the installation of the new cables along the road and the civil works required to install the substation.

The second stage of the work will be a two-week closure of Cobb Road from the junction of Pound Street to the junction with Shire End Lane.

The road will be closed from 4 to 15 November between 7am and 5pm but access will be possible outside of these times.

National Grid technician Jack Osborne said: “I am aware that this is the only access to the Cobb, which is why we have tried to minimise disruption by maintaining access whilst we are not working.

“I am working with the town council and county council to obtain parking permits for residents and visitors to use Holmbush car park and possibly Broad Street car park so vehicles can be moved before work starts each day.

“The aim is to complete this section and open the road before 15 November.”

Any businesses with deliveries during the road closure are asked to email a date and rough time to josborne@nationalgrid.co.uk to arrange access.

The final stage of the cable installation work will require two-way traffic lights on Cobb Road from 18 November to 20 December.

Mr Osborne said: “During this time, we will be landing the new substation and completing cable terminations within the new substation, there is also an electricity link box chamber situated on Cobb Road which has been identified to be nearing the end of its operational life.

“We will therefore be replacing this during the work to avoid disruption in the future.”

The new cables and substation will be supplied from the existing high voltage cable on Pound Street, so three-way traffic lights will be required on the junction of Cobb Road and Pound Street, probably in early-January for two weeks.

Mr Osborne said: “I apologise for any inconvenience these essential works may cause but the upgrade to the network is required to improve the quality of supply to residents and businesses in the area.”
