Beaches

There are four beaches to enjoy in Lyme Regis, each suited for different purposes. We own and maintain the main sand beach and a large section of Monmouth Beach.

Front Beach

Front Beach is split between a sandy area and a large pebble area, which is part of the coastal protection scheme, making it the most popular beach for swimming and paddling.

During peak season we rake the beach every day, RNLI lifeguards are stationed on the sand in a bespoke hut, and our beach showers are connected. Amenities including toilets and food and drink outlets are close at hand.

Dogs are allowed on this beach, on a lead, between October and April, inclusive.

Monmouth Beach

Monmouth Beach extends over a kilometre southwest from the Cobb and is mainly pebbles. Bordering this beach is the chalet, caravan and beach hut site, owned by the council, and Monmouth Beach and Cabanya car parks.

The popular ammonite graveyard or pavement can be found at this beach and it is also the point of access for the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve.

Dogs are allowed on this beach, off the lead, at any time of the year.

Church Cliff Beach

Church Cliff Beach is to the east of the town in front of the rock armour that protects Gun Cliff Walk and the buildings behind, with steps leading down to it.

The beach is sandy in places and an extensive rock ledge is revealed at low tide. The River Lym flows into the bay at this beach.

Dogs are allowed on this beach, off the lead, at any time of the year.

East Cliff (Back) Beach

East Cliff Beach, known locally as Back Beach, is the furthest east, extending towards Charmouth. The cliffs surrounding the beach, called the Spittles, are very unstable with extensive mudflows in place, so caution should be exercised.

The seawall, Church Cliff Walk, provides access to the fossil-rich beach, but be aware the it can get cut off at high tide.

From the seawall you can access Charmouth Road car park, via the 114 steps up the hill.

Dogs are allowed on this beach, off the lead, at any time of the year.
