Richard Kaye – Recent Work (189 words)

This is a hugely varied show including paintings, wooden reliefs, screen prints and drawings. Richards work is currently heavily influenced by architecture and bold angular compositions.

The most recent paintings include abstract landscapes featuring views of Exeter as well as some architectural paintings of buildings at night time.

Also on show are a series of wooden reliefs featuring brightly painted shapes arranged on top of each other. The shapes are angular, sometimes architectural, and the colours are vivid. In these pieces of work the shapes literally jump out of the frame due to the depth of the layers and use of complimentary colours.

The print work on show includes a series of screen prints focusing on Brutalist architecture in London, bought to life using bright primary and neon colours to force the viewers attention. These works include Trellick Tower, the National Theatre and the Barbican.

Although the work is varied, the viewer can feel a real sense of journey with the angular shapes and uncompromising compositions.

Richard’s exhibitions in the Malthouse have always proved popular, as his work is so far removed from what’s often exhibited at coastal galleries.
