The Mayoral Chains return home to Lyme Regis

You may or may not have noticed our Mayor, Cllr Philip Evans MBE, has not been wearing the full Civic regalia at civic and town events lately.

However, we are delighted to announce the return of the Mayor’s ceremonial chains to the council — newly updated to mark the reign of His Majesty King Charles III. After a short trip to Fattorini’s, the historic jewellers and insignia specialists, the chains are back where they belong, proudly bearing the new CR cypher — Charles Rex — recognising our new monarch.

The mayoral chains, steeped in tradition and history, are an important part of civic life and a visible link to the monarchy. Updating the insignia is a longstanding custom whenever a new sovereign ascends the throne, ensuring the chain reflects the current reign.

The addition of the CR cypher is a small but significant detail that connects Lyme Regis to the national story of King Charles III’s coronation and reign. King Charles III became King of the United Kingdom and the 14 other Commonwealth realms in 2022.

Fattorini’s, founded in 1827 and renowned for their craftsmanship, took great care in adding the cypher, preserving the intricate beauty of the chains while honouring this new chapter in royal history. It’s a fitting tribute and a reminder of the enduring traditions that tie our community to the wider nation.

The Mayor’s chains made their first official reappearance at the Dorchester Civic Day, and will continue to be worn at upcoming Civic events.
