AS we approach the 80th anniversary of VE Day—Victory in Europe Day—Lyme Regis is once again preparing to mark this poignant occasion with heartfelt respect and community spirit.

Across the UK, poppies are worn each year to honour those who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars, as well as in conflicts since. Here in Lyme Regis, remembrance is a deeply valued tradition, woven into the fabric of our town’s identity. With VE DAY 80 on the horizon, Our team have been hard at work ensuring the town plays its part in this national act of remembrance.

This year, a particularly striking tribute has been created in the Diana Memorial Garden, nestled within Langmoor Gardens. A beautiful floral display in the shape of a poppy has been carefully planted, symbolising not only the enduring symbol of remembrance but also the beauty and unity of our community coming together to honour the past.

Standing guard over this poppy are two ‘Silent Soldiers’—silhouetted figures placed as a solemn tribute to those who served. These quiet sentinels serve as a reminder of the sacrifice made by so many, and their presence adds a powerful sense of reverence to the garden space. They watch silently over the floral poppy, reflecting the respect and gratitude we hold for all those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Our team has been incredibly dedicated in bringing these tributes to life. From early planting to carefully positioning the Silent Soldiers, their work represents Lyme Regis’ deep appreciation for our history, and for the individuals whose bravery shaped the world we live in today.

As VE DAY 80 approaches, we invite residents and visitors alike to pause at the Diana Memorial Garden and the war memorials at George's Square and Anning Road, reflect beneath the watchful gaze of the Silent Soldiers, and remember the legacy of courage, sacrifice, and peace.

Lest we forget.
